Lesson 16: I MATTER

Before I was my child’s mama, I was Tanika Monique. Before I was my husband’s wife, I was Tanika Monique. Before I was my students’ teacher I was Tanika Monique. As a new mom, I find myself thinking about my child constantly and less and less on myself. I felt like I lost myself in taking care of my child that I stopped taking care of myself. I had to pause the other day and remind myself that I MATTER too.

This is something that I have struggled with for a while—making the time for myself. My baby can be clean, fed, have on a clean diaper, while I’m sitting here hair looking a mess, needing to pee, and to take a shower. As a person who takes my commitments very seriously I put my all into what I do. It dawned on my the other day that I need to recommit to myself. Get back to me. Give my all to myself. Even before I had a baby I noticed that once I started teaching, I started to put things that were once important to me on the back burner—this blog, exercise, cooking, writing, etc.

People always say “#NewYearNewMe. I don’t want to be cliche, but I know that in order to give my best to my relationships, I have to give to myself first. InshaAllah (Godwilling) 2018 will be a year where I be the Tanika Monique who makes time for herself on a daily basis.

Your commitments to family, friends and work are important. But guess what, SO ARE YOU! You are a uniquely beautiful creation who matters just as much as the everyone else. Take some time to do something you love each day.
